Awareness Building Trainings For Tannery Workers On OSH


OSHE foundation recently organized an awareness building training for tannery workers on Occupational Safety and Health at the office room of Tannery Workers Union, Hemayetpur, Savar under Leather Supply Chain Project funded by Solidar Suisse, Swizerland . A total of 15 tannery workers who are engaged with Tannery Workers Union took part in the training course. Mr. Alam Hossain, Assistant Director of the foundation made welcome speech and short brief about the Project focusing the objective of the training in the opening session where Mr. Abul Kalam Azad, President of Tannery Workers Union, Ms. Sarmin Sultana (MPH in OHS), Lecturer, Dept. of OEH, Bangladesh University of Health Sciences (BUSH) and Mr. Hafizur Rahman, Admin & HR Officer of OSHE were present. Md. Alam Hossain also moderated the session.

In 1st session, Mr. Abul Kalam Azad, President of Tannery Workers Union conducted the session on Rights of Tannery Workers as per Bangladesh Labour Act 2006. In this session, he discussed on appointment and contract of workers, Wages, Working hours, leave and minimum wage, compensation, welfare & social protection and Bargaining & Social Dialogue.

In 2nd session, Ms. Nazmun Nahar, Asst. Inspector General (Health), Department of Inspection for Factories and Establishment (DIFE), Ministry of Labour & Employment, Government of People’s Republic of Bangladesh carried out a session on Occupation Safety and Health at Tannery Industry. In this session she made a power point presentation on OSH for tannery workers, Uses of chemicals and proper management, Machine & Electric safety, uses of PPE, health hygiene & cleanness and common diseases of workers. In this session she also shared the concept of OSH, why this is important for tannery workers and how the employers and workers can contribute for a healthy workplace. She also shared the legal provisions related to OSH of tannery workers in Bangladesh Labour Act and Bangladesh Labour Rules. In 3rd session, Mr. Hafizur Rahman, Admin & HR Officer of OSHE took a session on Safety Committee. This session includes What is safety committee and rules and regulation of safety committee, Structure of safety committee, responsibilities of safety committee and management.

After the training session the participants expressed that they received such kind of training for the first time. They all appreciated the initiatives and recommended to organize more training for tannery workers. At the end of the session, Mr. Alam Hossain concluded the training course with vote of thanks.
