OSHA, ?Elevator Industry Safety Partners? renew alliance to address safety hazards with elevators, similar industry devices

The U.S. Department of Labor’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration and a group of elevator industry stakeholders known as the “Elevator Industry Safety Partners” collectively have signed a five-year alliance agreement to renew their commitment to protect nearly 75,000 workers who construct, install, repair and maintain elevator industry conveyances. OSHA’s 10 regions nationwide will participate in the alliance.

The alliance seeks to improve safety and focus on falls, electrical, struck-by and caught-between objects, and other hazards encountered by those who on elevators, escalators and moving walkways. Alliance participants will continue to develop safety programs, provide training, share injury, illness and fatality data, and cross-train agency staff.

Since the 2019 signing of the original agreement, the alliance has developed materials that address industry-specific, 10-hour OSHA courses for general industry and construction, and is developing curriculum for new hires training, best practices for fall protection and lockout/tagout.

The Elevator Industry Safety Partners comprises the Elevator Contractors of America, Elevator Industry Work Preservation Fund, International Union of Elevator Constructors, National Association of Elevator Contractors, National Elevator Industry Educational Program and National Elevator Industry Inc.

OSHA’s Alliance Program works with groups committed to worker safety and health to prevent workplace fatalities, injuries and illnesses. These groups include unions, consulates, trade or professional organizations, businesses, faith- and community-based organizations, and educational institutions. OSHA and the groups work together to develop compliance assistance tools and resources, share information with workers and employers, and educate workers and employers about their rights and responsibilities.
